Master in Education or MBA degree

Master in Education or MBA degree?
I'm interested in starting my own language school. Although I've been teaching for 10 years, I don't have any formal teaching education, and I'm really interested in learning more about teaching methods in second language acquisition. I do have a degree in business at the undergraduate level, but I would also like to pursue an MBA with a concentration in entrepreneurship and start my school. I'm at a crossroads and don't know which way to go. Help!

You really have to take some teaching classes if you want to learn about teaching methods. You could just research the methods and hire teachers to implement the methods you decide are the best. You would run the business end of the school because no one would take you seriously as a teacher without a teaching degree. It would hamper your ability to enroll students.

2
Get your MBA. I think so many school districts have financial problems because they are truly businesses being run by people that know nothing about business. They may have been great teachers in the classroom, but that does not mean they know how to run a school/district. I would get my MBA and start your school. Hire great staff and then you can take a course here and there so that you truly know the methods and principals your teachers are utilizing in their classrooms.

3
Get the MBA. You will have a solid business background to run a successful school. Also, as part of your business plan, hire qualified and competent language instructors to help you build-up your customer base and credibility. While growing the business, enroll in a distant learning program to obtain either a teaching certificate or a teaching degree to supplement your already impressive credentials. Good luck on your endeavors.

Is it better to get another bachelor's degree in elementary education, or get a master's

Is it better to get another bachelor's degree in elementary education, or get a master's?
I already have a BFA in Theatre and I want to teach elementary school. Am I more likely to be hired with a bachelor's degree in education, or a master's degree? I live in Illinois and will be getting certified here. I want to teach in the Chicagoland area. I've had classroom experience at the early childhood education level, as well as tutoring experience. Will the experience help me get hired?

Check with the state department of ed. If you live in a state like NY you will need to get a Masters in Education anyway.

2
It depends are where you are located... In my state and many others it would be foolish to get your masters and then try to get a teaching job at the elementary level. Many districts do not have the money to pay someone with their masters.

3
Depends. I would go for the Master's degree. In most school districts that kicks you up on the payscale. Since the school district would not have to pay you for any experience, the initial cost to them would be minimal. While you are getting your Master's, concentrate on math & science. Some school districts & states now require 4-6 grade teachers to be specialists in various areas, those are the ones with the highest demand.

You can go into consulting, with either a non-profit or a for-profit, both of whom do work in education. You can work for educational policy groups. Check on idealist.com for an idea of the types of companies/positions available. You can also work for a non-educational company that offers training to its workforce. Recognize how many of your skills -- training and literacy especially -- are transferrable to other fields.

Doctor of Medicine is at the same level of education as Master's degree or Ph.D

Doctor of Medicine is at the same level of education as Master's degree or Ph.D?
In applying for immigration to Canada, which is the equivalent of a Doctor of Medicine, master's degree or PhD? thanks.
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

1
In between. It is a doctorate, which makes it closer in nature to the Ph.D; however, as degrees are ranked, the Ph.D. is considered a higher degree than the MD.

2
I'm not sure what you mean by equivalent. Apples and oranges. If you want to treat sick people, an MD is "better." If you want to be an expert in a given field that you want to dedicate your life to exploring, a PhD is "better." If you are looking to make your overbearing parents who need to project their own hopes and dreams on to you happy , then thats something none of us can tell you.

3
It's closer to a Master's.

4
A MD is nearly the equivalent but its just in a different field. a phD is a Doctor of philosophy...and you need this degree to teach most areas in universities or to be considered a researcher of the area...that applies to many fields such as business, social sciences (economics, sociology, pyschology). MD is just a Doctor of Medicine....so its comparable to PhD in the fact that you get the title of a doctor, but otherwise not much difference between that and a Masters.

I would think that most education employers will accept an online degree if it it regionally accredited, so be sure this is the case before you enroll in a school. To learn more about acceptable accreditation commisions, check out http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/accreditation_pg7.html . I am currently studying at Ashford University for my bachelors degree in psychology. I choose Ashford over University of Phoenix and American Continental University because they are less expensive, yet you get a regionally accredited quality education. To check them out, their website is http://www.ashford.edu . I believe they also offer a masters degree in education. Capella University offers an online masters degree in postsecondary and adult education, as well as many other masters degrees. Their address is http://www.capella.edu . NorthCentral University offers masters degree in education, including a specialization in onling learning. I will enroll here in a couple of years to earn a masters in psychology so that I can teach psychology at a community college or online. The address is http://www.ncu.edu . I wish you the very best!

G'day, Congratulation on getting such high IELTS score. At least you know that it is most unlikely that you'll have problem in English while studying. To be eligible for a Masters course in Australia, you will need to have the degree that deemed as equivalent to Australian Bachelor Degree. You will need to fill in the application form and send them together with the certified copy of all of your academic transcripts. If they cannot accept you for the Masters course, they may offer you a place in their Bachelor degree course with credit transfer, so you do not have to study from year 1 again. There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and tightly regulated, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The Australian uni's offering Masters in automotive are as follows (no particular orders): RMIT Uni (www.rmit.edu.au) Uni SA (www.unisa.edu.au) Tuition fee & requirements will be available in those websites. Please make sure that the information you accessing are the ones for international students, not for local students, as there are some difference in regards to tuition fees. Once decided on the uni, fill in the application form and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification (in English and original language). The process will take abt 2-3weeks, depending on the time of the year. Hope this helps. Good luck for your study :)

No, first u will have to do B.Ed

2
Yes. Some schools actually prefer it that way. For example, Im getting my bachelors in English then my masters in Education because thats how my university told me to do it.

3
Depending on where you live it may or may not be possible. In the United States, different states have different laws for getting a teaching license. Usually it is possible to become certified in Teaching if you don't already have an undergrad degree however. Ex: A person with an Undergrad in Mathematics could get their graduate degree in Mathematical Education.

4
You can from certain Universities. Most of the time this still requires some undergrad work. For instance at Truman State University they specifically design their undergrad program to lead directly to the Master of Arts in Education (MAE). You get your undergrad in a related field (history, biology, English, etc.) while taking a few education courses (four or five if memory serves). This prepares you for Masters work if you are accepted.

5
I did. My undergrad is in languages, my masters in education. I went to college and grad school in NY.

6
Call and ask the school that you're interested in. I work in an MSW program and we'll accept any bachelor's degree from an accredited university, you do not need a BSW to get into our program. Programs vary from site to site. Good luck!!

7
Yes. Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL has such a program. http://www.seuniversity.edu/ I am sure other schools do too.

8
Yes, you can. But when you are looking at masters programs, be sure to look for programs that include "initial certification" as part of the degree. I am assuming that because you want a degree in education you want to teach or do something else in the education field (ie. administration). Because you did not get a bachelors in education, you do not have teacher certification. You will not be able to teach without certification. So talk to the advisors about your goals and they can get you on the right track. Most masters degrees in education do not include certification because they assume you already have it; however, there are programs out there that do exactly what you want to do; just be sure to look for "initial certification." I think it's awesome that you already have a CSI degree because this could help you in SO many ways. You could become a computer teacher, and there is a lot of money out there for schools to improve their technology. This might even lead to a job in the technology department of a school district. Technology is becoming more and more important each day to education. Good luck to you!

9
Yes, absolutely... at least in Maine. That's what my plan of action is. I'm currently a Communications major, so I will be coming out of school with a BFA in Communications. After a year or so, I will be going back for the "Extended Teacher Education Program," which is a one year consolidated course which will lead to my graduation with a Masters in Education.

2
The best thing you can do is to contact the university of your choice and ask them about scholarships. If you contact the Dean of the department, they will know if there are any scholarships available for foreign students.

3
Depending on the program, most of the time you can get some funding for a masters but you might also have to work to supplement it. Check on the websites of the schools you are interested in and read what the financial aid section says for graduate students. Another option is to work for a company and hope they will pay for you to do it, but that might take longer. good luck

I'm not sure about masters, but I know a lot of Americans prefer PHD's in the UK because there is far less coursework, so it takes far less time. I think it just depends on which university and which program within that university. A crappy university in the U.S. will not be as good as Cambridge in the U.K. I hope you catch my drift.

You do not mention masters in which field, that would help. Call centers is certainly not a good idea as the pay is low and the hours are odd. You also do not mention which city you are looking for. The best way to get a job as the previous reader mentions is via references so get in touch with your friends, family and previous managers to see if they have any openings. That is really your best bet. There are tons of websites offering jobs but with the rising unemployment and Satyam employees looking for work (assuming you are in IT), this may not work out. I am sorry to hear about your father's passing away. I went through the same situation a year ago and I think you are doing the right thing by going back and supporting your family. I wish you the very best in your job search.

I am very foreign and sometimes nostalgic, but I was wondering whether it is worth to study at a reputed university such as MIT, Berkeley, Cambridge, Oxford or Edinburgh by obtaining loan if you were accepted for a masters degree. Is it worth and can there be a maximum likelihood of ending up with a good job and salary in the united kingdom or united states I am very afraid and I wanna know whether it is worth to risk ourselves and go study there.

Yes, you can. It's the same length master's as any other. (1 year full-time)

2
It depends on the state. In California, you would be shooting yourself in the foot. A masters would mean you have way too many units and you would cost too much to hire. However, in many states you have to have a masters. Also, you will likely need extra education for your administrative license. So, get your teaching license, get a job, then decide. If you want to be a principal some day, get the educational leadership masters.

The free education MIGHT end January 1st 2010, the parliament is going to vote on that in a couple of weeks. The education is worth as much as it is in Britain and the US (though we don't have any universities like Harvard or Oxford.. but no one else in the world does either so..). I can almost guarantee that you're not gonna get a job here after graduation. Unemployment is expected to rise to over 10% in the next few years.

if you want to do this as cheaply as possible, you may want to consider an ACP. Search for "alternative certification program" and the name of your city. Look at the websites and see which offer an internship type program. here is how mine (ACT houston) went. We had class on Monday nights and almost all day Saturday for about 2 months. I was taught by two teachers in the district I currently work for. One of the teachers gave me a lead (my former AP had just been given a new school). I used her recommendation to get me an interview. In the interview, I used the name of the other instructor because she was so well respected in the district. I interviewed at two places. The first school, the principal said that the HR department said they couldn't hire me because i was an ACP candidate. The second principal went to HR and fought for me and I got the job. Sometimes it is harder to get in, but it is the quickest way. During my first year, it was my internship. I was observed several times by my ACP, went to monthly meetings, and the principal had to agree to resign me. When he agreed, I was able to get my certificate (as opposed to the 1 year probationary certificate). Each ACP is different, but I think my ACP did a very good job and gave me lots of support. I had to take my content exam before my internship and I took the teaching exam during my internship. During the internship, money to pay the ACP was taken directly out of my paycheck (which is much better than having to take out a loan). Before you do this though, PLEASE make sureyou want this. Many people quit within the first couple years because I think they underestimate the utter work required, the stress, and the way the kids will behave. Good luck.

4
In Kentucky you could go ahead and get the master's in ed. Good luck to you!

No problemo. Most Masters are in fact conversion degrees to qualify you in an area different from your undergrad. The most famous example is an MBA. And guess what - education is one of those most. Know heaps of people who had an undergrad in all sorts of things like biochemistry but did a Masters to become teachers. Didn't' like teaching though and left - but that's another story. Thanks Bill

Wow ! A Master's degree in psychology! Congratulations. You can be a counsellor or teach psychology to Business management professionals. Or come to India. There are a whole lot of options here. With the proliferation of business management schools in India, you can try your luck here. In India , even students of visual communications study psychology for a semester. They study stuff like parent-adult-child ego, associative psychology and so on. I have read in Lee Iaccoca's autobiography that he studied psychology as part of his MBA. In big industrial houses, there are psychology teachers imparting training to existing engineers and managers and to fresh management trainees. Career counselling centres require people like you. You options are endless. Hope my limited knowledge has helped you. Regards, S.Suresh, Trichy,

Of course. Keep studying, go to the learning center at your school, and go for it!

2
why not? We are capable individuals and your GPA only reflects that you are just taking it easy. You need to focus and at this point in your life ask yourself "am I a follower or a leader?" If you are a follower, then stop get an easy job, but just make sure that you don't get marry until you have a job paying at least 12/hour. If you are a leader type, then when you finish your master, then you will be earning $25/hour and you may get marry and live a better life.

dont feel bad.. im sure u can continue ur studies..

The first thing to understand is the *snooty* nature of academia, much of the snootiness being wholly undeserved. Academians tend to try to forge policies, while having little-to-know street-smarts, the results tending to be inapposite or anomalous. That being said, the Admissions Office of a University, filled with Academians, tends to operate in the same fashion. So, they will look at your GPA and go, "Ok, this ain't Master's material." Why? Because it's the lazy-mans way out. Who among us haven't tried to cut corners in our job to save us the effort? That these folks making such decisions are affecting others lives is lost on them many times, thus, you must distinguish yourself and stand out... I prefer the direct approach. I would arrange sit-downs with the Director or Dean of Admissions for every serious school you want to get into, and just tell them pure and simple: You want in and here's why. Your grades weren't the greatest and here's why. This is what I want to pursue with my Masters and here's why. You will remind them that grades alone aren't a guarantee of future results based on a number of factors including a) the subjective nature of grading b) the level of interest in the coursework c) outside demands d) other achievements e) Letters of Recommendation from former professors... Further, do your research on all these Admissions Directors. Find out there Alma Maters, there respective outside interests, etc. In short, get a concise biography of each interviewer, thus allowing you to guage your conversation in such away that resonates with them. This is a sales job, and no salesman is a better salesman that makes a customer (in this case our proverbial Admissions decision maker!) resonate with himself. Read about Narcisscus in old Greek, you'll get the general idea... Additionally, find out if you have *any* links with these individuals, however tenuous, in terms of who knows whom...you might be surprised how close you are to knowing them. Think about the old saw about "we're only three links (people) away from everyone else." I've done this, and I've not thought of any famous person that I'm not only 3 or 4 steps away from knowing them, simply by virtue of who-knows-who... Finally, attitude. Think of yourself as heads and shoulders above the rest, and you will be heads and shoulders above the rest.

5
Of course! But you'll have to prove yourself to the admissions that there's more to you than your gpa. Keep in mind that graduate school admissions look at other factors (i.e., test scores, extracurriculars, letters of rec, etc.); they usually want different students.

6
If you struggled that much for a undergraduate degree maybe you should consider another field of study. Usually though as long as your gpa is at least 2.5 and all your major courses are a C or above it is usually not a problem to continue in some advanced education. Though you may not get into snotty upscale colleges. Good luck.

If you speak German, most universities offer free or inexpensive college education, and international students are admitted. Fachhochschule Pforzheim, between Stuttgart and Karlsruhe, offers an International Business certificate program with classes in English. It also offers a standard MBA program (as well as other program) with most classes in German.

2
As far as I know there is no University in Germany that offers free Master degrees, except for you have studied there from the first semster, however in comparison to many other countries tuition is not that high as we just started to charge at all, if you speak German you should be able to staudy at any university, if not you need to look for international studies, I have studied international business in Dresden (www.htw-dresden.de) check the page they have all the fees online, ask me for help if you need greets Anne

I left uni in 2003, at this time studying for a masters degree was still free. I was at the Uni of TĂƒ¼bingen living in a student dorm. Several of the people living on the same flor where intenational students doing their masters in Hydrogeography - completely for free and a few of them on a scholarship from the DAAD (450 EUR a month then) see http://www.daad.de. The course was taught completely in English. There are nowadays several universities that have masters degrees taught in English, I am sure you'll be able to find one. (www.uni-magdeburg.de is one of them.)The DAAD also still exists and will hand out scholarships to gifted international students. As to student fees - I don't know anything about them. (They are a recent addition to German student life.) But if you found a course that interests you, why don't you write to the university to inquire about this? Be warned though, that even if the course is free, you will still be asked to support yourself during your stay out of your savings or you will be asked by the German government to leave the country. A non-EU student will be given a limited work permit to supplement hir income by working for 90 days fulltime or 180 days parttime. A EU student will not require a work permit, but will instead be subject to the same student labour restrictions the Germans are under - also working only part-time during the whole year or fully during the semester breaks. Yet anyway you turn it, most part-time jobs will not cover the roughly 500-700 EUR per month you need at mimimum to cover your cost of living in Germany. Hope I helped.

Pretty much any program is going to offer that if you reapply to the masters program given the education masters degree only takes one year full time plus some summer work (30-40 credits only). But combined programs- I believe Rutgers offers something of the likes, Detroit Mercy does, West Virginia does, William and Mary does, as does the Univ of Tennessee- but other than that, youll have to google- there are probably a few more.

hi Rutgers definitely does you have to apply before spring of your junior year and you have to take the GRE's before then I'm trying to fit all the req.s in now XD peace

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is generally a pre-service degree that usually requires a minimum of 30 semester hours beyond the Bachelor's degree. While the program often requires education classes in order to meet state licensure requirements, it emphasizes advanced course work in a specific academic discipline to enhance one's knowledge in that subject area. Candidates usually spend a semester as a student teacher in order to earn the degree. There are two general models that (MAT) degrees follow: a 5th year model in which students spend one year extra beyond their bachelorĂ¢€™s degree to earn a masters degree and an initial teaching license; and a Flex program which usually offers part time weekend and evening courses to accommodate professionals who are changing careers. The MasterĂ¢€™s of Arts in Teaching degree is often advantageous to middle school and secondary school teachers because it allows them to focus on subject area knowledge in their undergraduate program and then acquire pedagogical skills in their graduate studies. It differs from the Masters in Education (MEd) degree which is usually geared toward practicing teachers, or toward those who desire to serve as counselors (school or otherwise) or as educational administrators.

2
CanProf is correct, but I'd like to add one thing. the Master of Education is usually the type of degree but you focus on a specific area. So you might get an MEd Reading, or MEd Instructional Technology, or MEd Curriculum Instruction and Design. The MAT degree cannot be specified to any specific area. It is strictly general teaching.

A Master's degree (Masters of Arts - MA, Masters of Science - MS or Masters of Education - MEd) in psychology is what is also known as "graduate school." You can only complete a Master's degree, AFTER you have finished your Bachelor's degree. A Master's degree in psychology will generally take you 2-3 years depending upon the University and type of program.

2
obviously it is much more harder than doing bachelors. It takes about 2 to 2 1/2 years.

3
I found graduate school easy compared to undergraduate work. Graduate school was harder work but there was less learning outside of my interests so it was more fun. What the person said first about time is what I have found to be true....1.5 to two years. There is usually a time limitation on the graduate course work...such as five years maximum to complete the requirements. If you go for a Master's Degree in Psychology, you may need to complete an internship after you earn the master's degree before you can be a registered or certified Psychologist. You need to talk to your advisor if you are already in an undergrad. Psych. program. You will also have to maintain a high average in all of the graduate level courses. If you do not get a high grade point average in graduate school, they can kick you out of the program.

If this qualifies you to teach in the US (does it? Don't know enough about the US system to guess), then yes, it would be recognized. You can then apply for a position at a school and would complete an Overseas Trained Teacher Programme. Check out this link: http://www.tda.gov.uk/Recruit/thetrainingprocess/typesofcourse/ottp.aspx

I have an M.A. and it is viewed as something that makes you more qualified in your subject area for sure, and also boosts your pay. If I want to go into administration, or work for the government in curriculum development for example, I would need to get an M.Ed. I have friends doing that currently, and I don't think in terms of difficulty, that they are equal. The M.A. was definitely more rigorous.

I did my MA in applied linguistics at the University of Melbourne. I have a number of friends that completed their MA's in Education there as well. Melbourne University is the TOP university in Australia. Check the UK Times Educational Supplement - university rankings of world universities http://www.thes.co.uk/worldrankings/ if you need confirmation. I loved going there. I am American too, and chose the school because of its excellent reputation and faculty. Check it out! http://www.unimelb.edu.au/

G'day, There are plenty area in Master of Education that you can choose from. Unfortunately there are no universities in Australia that offers all of the area of study. There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly controlled, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. In regards to ranks, there are plenty of organisations trying to make ranks of the universities in Australia and the world, but none of them are recognised by the Australian government. The famous/favourite ones will be the one in the Group of 8 (www.go8.edu.au), but it is mainly for promotional effort as none of the universities can claim that they are the best at everything. I am happy for the first answerer that he finds uni of Melbourne is suitable for him. Unfortunately there are also ppl who do not like uni of Melbourne, so as you can see, how good/bad the uni is in the eye of the beholder. To find out the latest info abt course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to the Dept. of Education, Science and Training website (http://cricos.dest.gov.au). It will give the list of institutions that are able to offer courses to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. The info abt fees and requirements are available from the universities' websites. Please make sure that the information you are accessing are the one for International Students. Once decided on the institution, fill in the application form for the international students and send it together with certified copy of your academic qualification (in English and original language). The process will take abt 2-3weeks, depending on the time of the year. Hope this helps. Good luck on your studies and welcome to Australia :)
